Image scores
or something
2020: Covid. Our residencies, tours, exhibitions are cancelled, postponed or evaporate into vague suspension. We re-orient to working from home, creating pre-school, worrying for beloved people in cities while still getting used to having this much uninhabited acreage around us.
I was so hungry for the UW residency – it was right at my fingertips. Images and shapes I had wanted to work through, turn over, move inside of with the lovely group. So I decide to build some of them into objects. Then I decide to photograph the objects in ways that feel similar to the words/scores I might have offered to the dancers.
I begin emailing them to the cast – what do they make of them? Can they be un-languaged scores? Are they just shapes and textures?
I email them to a lot of other kind and likely perplexed people. I’m not sure what any of us make of them, of an “Image Score” project. Probably feels both unclear and too serious. But I’m into the images at least.
I’d share some responses, but as you may be seeing these for the first time I’d rather leave you to your own interpretations. That having been kind of the point.
