Myth making
filming and seeing
Began thinking about how to use my camera here before we even arrived. In Japan I had a very satisfying long-form observation practice that, after three years, turned into the film Sagamihara. On the rental farm I began a similar practice, though not knowing how long we’d be able stay, I filmed some things right away and then returned to them again later. A strange little narrative started taking shape, turning into the short, a valley myth, for Malacarne’s La Befana festival.

And I’m still finding/filming these little myths. Hoping eventually it will become a longer film in three parts. Filming is a really satisfying method for “entering” this landscape – from my belly in the snow, grass, or chaff. I love isolating the shapes here through the camera, waiting until motion or light changes how my eyes understand what I’m seeing. Just the time spent looking and waiting is plenty.
